Max Does the Right Thing. Thanks.

by on 11:14 pm.

I pointed out how sleazy it is that Burns has been trying to piggy back on Max Baucus’s popularity. He has been pulling a page from the Rehberg playbook and campaigning as a democrat, using Baucus’s record and hiding his own. Following the radio ad that ran in the Butte area disputing Burns’s claims, Tester is now running a television ad where Max sets the record straight. Matt McKenna says the ad will be running statewide and

you would have to be under a large rock in a deep hole not to see this ad over the next week

In truth, I think that the ad is very powerful. See for yourself.

On the phones last night one of very few undecideds answered - and I asked if he had any particular issues that were close to his heart that we could talk about to help make up his mind.

This guy lives in Butte, and has seen Burns attempt to take credit for the very bread we put in our mouths, and was beginning to buy it.

We chatted for a bit, I pointed out that Burns’ estimates were inflated, that the money will continue to go toward good, deserving projects like MSE and highways, and that Max Baucus is the senior Democrat on the finance committee, and he wholeheartedly supports Tester.

“He does?”
“Absolutely”
“Burns has him in his ads, though”
“Without Max’s permission, sir. You’re going to be seeing some ads in the next week that clarify. Burns is misleading you.”

Silence.

“Well, I guess if Max is behind Tester, how much more seniority do you need?”

Not a lot…

Burns is simply pointing out that Max has voted for conservative issues like the Patriot Act, estate tax cuts, banning flag burning and passing a persription drug program for seniors. Issues that Tester opposes. This is hardly campaigning like a Democrat. More like Max governing like a Republican.

Don’t forget that Max tied himself to President Bush in 2002 when he was running for re-election. TV ads that showed him at a signing ceremony and Bush praising him for helping pass the tax cuts.

Hypocracy. Dems can do it but Republicans dare not!

Andy: guess this means that Max can count on your support in ‘08. The fine points always seem to have a way of escaping you, O’Brien and Jake.

There is a huge distinction between Max’s ad using footage with Georgie and Conrad’s use of Max’s name — Bush never asked Max to pull the advertisement, there was never any objection levied against Max’s ad. Whereas, Max has repeatedly ask Conrad to stop using his name. Your argument is nonsensical - once again comparing apples and oranges.

Andy. Again? This gets too easy. While Jaxie pretty well handled you, I am going to point out one more issue.

Burns is simply pointing out that Max has voted for conservative issues

So, Burns is using his campaign money to attract his base to Max?

Andy,

Max used Bush’s own words praising him and you may also recall that, even so, Mike Taylor then ran an ad calling Max out for using Bush in his ad. (Remember the difference between an attaboy and an endorsement ad?) That deft bit of campaigning is probably what swung those two counties in Taylor’s favor that year.

“Hypocracy (sic). Republicans can do it but Dems dare not!”

As an aside, it’s amazing how many more Dems are using Bush in their ads this year. Though, not exactly in the same light.

Whatever Max may have said in the past, at least now he has grown a bit of a spine when it is needed.

I heard Max this afternoon speaking to a jam-packed, enthusiastic, standing room only crowd at Salish/Kootenai College, and he was WHOLEHEARTEDLY supporting Tester and very hard on Burns.

Max, Schweitzer, and Tester, scored big points with the crowd. It was truly an inspiration to be there. Lots of drumming, Indian singing, and prayers.

Plus lots of signs that said, “VOTE DEMOCRAT - MAKE YOUR INDIAN VOTE COUNT!”

Both Schweitzer and Tester stated that a large vote in Indian Country will put Tester over the top in the U. S. Senate race.

This was a “uniting” event. A far cry from the divisive events of Bush and Cheney here in Montana.

Let’s hear it for the “first” Montanans!!!
